   • Take a shower daily to keep the catheter clean.
   • Avoid lying on the tubing or the catheter to prevent blockages.
   • Secure the drainage bag just below the level of your bladder to maintain a continuous flow.
3. Knowing when to call a doctor

   It’s great to be independent in your personal care, but there’s nothing wrong with asking for help either. Remember to check in with your doctor when:

   • You have noticed that your catheter has slipped out.
   • You have a fever.
   • You have been producing less urine than usual.
   • You have noticed a foul smell from your urine.
   • You have abdominal pain.
4. Changing the drainage bag

   In most cases, a drainage bag (the pouch which collects urine) will need to be changed twice a day; once in the morning and once before bed. To make the procedure easier it’s important that you prepare all the materials needed ahead of time.

   Aside from that, you should also keep in mind to secure the leg bag below the level of your knee to improve the drainage. But don’t put it on too tight as it might cause you to develop blood clots.

Make it a habit to prevent the bag from getting completely full as it will decrease the risk of leakages! Just remember to drain the bag into the toilet every 2-4 hours.
